Here's a little something i did the other day:
Bombay Bicycle Club – A Different Kind Of Fix
Bombay bloody Bicycle Club. Yeah, that’s right, those cheeky
chappies from Landan are back again with another serving of sweet guitar
infused couscous. This latest lesson in how exactly to make music, entitled A
Different Kind Of Fix, proves to any lingering disbelievers that this sexy
quartet have real and genuine talent. Quaint and kitsch can fuck right off if
they’re thinking about attaching themselves to the heels of BBC. There’s
certainly none of that present here. Thought-provoking, intelligent and
emotional (in a good way) are the lasting impressions from this LP. And the
impressions will most certainly be long lasting. These aren’t the listen then
disregard songs that are today ever so present. The songs make an impression
and the album, as a whole listening experience is one to be valued.
Album 3 sees the band progress from the acoustically layered
lands of Flaws with the inclusion of electric power. A return to the first
album then? Well, no as the evolution of song writing is evident. As always,
Steadman’s distinctive tones blissfully adorn every element of the arrangements
but this fix sees a much bigger and coherent sound in all facets. Songs like ‘Lights Out, Words Gone’
explore new territories, ones where funky bass lines successfully intertwine with
classic BBC mellifluousity.
Wanting to devour all those music notes like a chubby fat
kid at an all you can eat Pizza Hut buffet on Christmas would be completely
forgivable. But don’t, that would be greedy and then there would be none left
for all the other discerning folks to savour.
Loyal BBC fans will be delighted by the ever-developing
nature of this thoroughly exciting British talent. First-time listeners will be
ramming forks into their eyes for wasting their life up to this point not
listening to the enchanting array of music this band has thus far produced. Or
maybe they’ll just enjoy it like any sensible person should.
